Baden - Baden is a special city. Of all the German resorts, B-B is perhaps the most noble, the most fabulous. Although, if Dostoevsky chose this particular city to write his imperishable works, then it would be the height of disgrace to be surprised at other visitors.
My acquaintance with B - B began precisely with an eccentric resident of this city. Well, in what city in the world would a bum call his dog "Stravinsky"? I was dumbfounded by such a discrepancy between form and content, but continued my journey through the famous resort. Amazingly, a visit to the most majestic German resort both began and ended with the homeless. Ordinary noble bums. The latter slept peacefully at the bus stop under the schedule of flights from Moscow.
Baden - Baden got its name not because someone needs to repeat it twice.
This is a resort, which, along with Truskavets, Pyatigorsk or Karlovy Vary, went "to the waters. " Just in German, the word "Baden" means "to bathe. " Therefore, the literal translation sounds like "to swim - to swim. " And the city received a double name because the city of Baden is located in the Baden region, and in order to avoid explanations that this is Baden in Baden, the resort began to be called Baden - Baden.
It was here that the fashion for recreation on the waters was born. The most famous hydrotherapy establishments in the city are the Baths of Caracalla (Caracalla Therme) and Friedrichsbad (Friedrichsbad), largely due to the fact that these baths are the oldest in the city. In the 18-19th century, aristocracy from all over Europe came to Baden-Baden. Hence the fashion for non-traditional methods of treatment. Secular wellness baths, furnished with special taste and luxury, brought special glory to the German Baden.

But without knowing where it is, you can skip the entrance to the casino, the grandeur of the institution is so fadedly reflected in small letters at the entrance.
The casino in B-B is the oldest and most famous for its visitors. Some masterpieces of Russian literature were born thanks to this particular gambling establishment. For example, Fyodor Ivanovich Dostoevsky wrote "The Gambler" here, losing to dust. A memorial plaque on the house where he lived says that the famous horror of all schoolchildren "Crime and Punishment" was also composed in a German resort. Gogol, Tolstoy and Turgenev often came here during the creation of their best works.
In fact, as for a resort, the city is poor in sights, places of recreation, entertainment.
Among the main attractions are the baths, the casino (Kurhaus), the Trinkhalle (you can get a city map here for free), the Russian church, Dostoevsky's house, the Catholic Cathedral, the theater, the old cemetery, the statue of Otto von Bismarck and small architectural forms that change every a year to change the face of the city, so as not to get bored in it completely. For me, BAD license plates are also an attraction. They are especially popular with English speakers.
You can get to the city center on your own from any station. Take the bus that goes to Augusta Platz (Augusta-platz) via Leopolds-platz. These two squares are located in the very center and it is here that most of the city's attractions are concentrated.
My companion found out about another attraction, namely, about the dacha of Eduard Shevardnadze (remember such a Soviet minister, and then the leader of Georgia? ). According to reports, his mansion was located somewhere on Staufenberg Strasse.
The house is either 17, or 19. or 21. One way or another, it was necessary to go there through the cemetery, up the mountain. As a result, interest prevailed over laziness and we set off.
The cemetery in Baden-Baden is not much different from the park near the theater in terms of well-groomedness. Any city park can envy such purity and blooming (in the literal sense of the word). However, the cemetery does not tolerate fuss and delight, so we move on. The mansions on Staufenberg Strasse in the most elite district of Baden did not cause much admiration. Whether the local architects were modest, or something else, but let's face it, we've seen better. However, Shevardnadze's house could be recognized without difficulty. The fact is that the Germans usually do not hide their houses, and put them on display, they say, “look, what a beautiful home I have. ” Eduard Amvrosievich acted in the Soviet way: the house was not visible at all, since a huge fence and a bunch of surveillance cameras blocked everything around and spoiled the view.
As it turned out later, and 17, and 19, and 21 plots belonged to him, since the numbering of houses was interrupted before and continued after the indicated numbers.
Summing up the results of the trip to the glorious resort, I would like to say that the atmosphere in Baden is special. But in terms of beauty, the city, in my opinion, is inferior to Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic.
